We had a quick weekend get away to Edinburgh during our summer in Amsterdam. I believe we would have enjoyed a bit more time exploring this city and would love to come back sometime so that we can do so. Edinburgh has something to offer for just about anyone- with its beautiful parks, hiking trails, thriving restaurant and nightlife scene, & many educational tours/cultural events. An ideal day in this city would involve a scenic morning hike, a walking tour to learn about the city’s history in the afternoon, and winding down the day at a Scottish pub! Edinburgh has so much to offer, I would recommend spending at least 3 days here so that you can take it all in.
WHERE TO STAY:
During our stay in Edinburgh, we chose a hotel in New Town. We didn’t love our hotel, but there are several to choose from in this area. Separated by Princes Street Gardens, and a steep hill from Old Town, this area is filled with shops, restaurants, and cafes to keep you entertained.
WHAT TO DO AND SEE:
1. Take a hike up Arthur’s Seat
2. Visit the medieval Old Town and the Edinburgh Castle
3. Have a relaxing picnic in Princes Street Gardens
4. Take an underground tour to learn about the spooky history of the city. We did an underground tour with Mercat Tours and really enjoyed it (link below).
5. Visit a whiskey distillery
WHERE TO EAT & DRINK:
1. Timberyard- (Great food and drinks in an intimate setting).
2. Aizle – (locally inspired tasting menus in a cozy environment).
3. The Scan & Scallie- (traditional Scottish dishes with a sophisticated edge).
4. The Little Chartroom -(for brunch)!
